Remys Story
Remy Hidalgo was a beloved 16-year-old high school junior and athlete from Denham Springs, Louisiana, known for his kind heart, infectious personality, and dedication to his community and dreams of playing college football. He tragically passed away on September 18, 2020, after suffering an exertional heat stroke during football practice.
Life and Personality
Born on May 24, 2004, in Baton Rouge, Remy spent his entire life in Denham Springs. He was a junior at Denham Springs High School, where he was a member of the football and powerlifting teams, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and JADD (Jackets Against Destructive Decisions). Known affectionately as "Big Remdog," he was a good student with a 3.7 GPA and an aspiring college football player. Friends and family described him as a "gentle giant" and a "big teddy bear" who always encouraged others and ended every conversation with "I love you".
Tragic Passing and Legacy
On September 15, 2020, Remy collapsed at the end of a hot football practice and was hospitalized with a body temperature above 106 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite being placed in a cooling tub at the scene and later receiving advanced medical care, including an ECMO machine, he passed away three days later.
In the wake of his death, the Denham Springs community rallied in support, and his mother, Ashley Roberson, established the Remy Hidalgo Memorial Foundation. The foundation aims to prevent similar tragedies by raising awareness about heat-related illnesses and providing safety equipment, such as cold water immersion tubs and wet-bulb globe thermometers, to schools in Louisiana.
His death also led to the passage of the "Remy Hidalgo Act" in Louisiana, a law that mandates high schools have emergency action plans and cooling procedures in place for student-athletes. Through the foundation and this legislation, Remy's legacy lives on by making student athletics safer for others.

Thanks to Remy Hidalgo Memorial Foundation, our school feels safer during outdoor activities.
